If this were me I’d fail like 5 times just because I’d forget which portal I came out of and accidentally shoot the wrong one, thus messing up the whole sequence.

I have yet to find a game that was as immensely satisfying as Portal.

Fuck, I remember that room. It isn’t actually that hard to figure out what to do, but executing it takes a few tries.

I wish Portal 2 had more puzzles like this, where you’re scratching your head for a little bit and then trying to get it JUST right.

I feel like they playtested it TOO much and took out a lot of the challenge. Both of these games are masterpieces, but the first one was just a tad more cerebral which I like.

Portal 1 is the only one that actually made my brain hurt. Portal 2 just felt like twitch shooting sadly.

But hey, Cave Johnson was hilarious, so I won’t complain too much.

There’s no way I’d ever figure that out. I actually still haven’t finished Portal 1. I got the Orange Box and played all the Half Life’s. Then played Portal for like 1 afternoon, got stuck on a level, and haven’t gone back. I will eventually.

This is a good example of what bugged me about portal 2.

Sure Portal 2 had some pretty levels. Some fun bits. A fantastic ending sequence.

But portal one had *open levels.* In portal 1, almost every surface could have portals on it. In portal 2, in most cases, the only surfaces you could put portals on were the ones you *needed.* (Seriously, go through and count how many 45-degree angle ramps there are that can receive portals. They basically only show up when you need to launch yourself somewhere.)

The logical result of this is that most levels in portal 2 felt like you were finding “the” solution, and most levels in portal 1 felt like “oh good, I figured out a way to get through that room.” Sure, there was usually a solution that was probably what the devs had in mind. But there were so many more possibilities.

Portal 2 felt like it gave me an experience on rails. Portal 1 felt like it gave me a neat new (brain-bending) toy and a sandbox to explore and play with it in.

I respect portal 2 as a game – they had a heck of a predecessor to live up to, and they didn’t actually *disappoint* me that much. But they also never quite caught the same sense of magic and wonder that came from staring at a room, perplexed. And not thinking “how do they want me to solve this”, but rather “how am **I** going to get through this?”

It’s a subtle distinction, but for me, it’s the difference between a solid game, and a masterpiece.

Me n my friend killed on portal, was one of the best games to play with a buddy….the only negative is that with our synergy it made the game pretty damn short.

ELI5 How developers make puzzels like these? Some of them are so tricky and precise, I wonder how the developers have enough mental firepower to generate so many complicated puzzles.
