Tl;dr: the following text was found in Wii U update 5.5.2:

    >”The Miiverse service has ended. Miiverse and any software features that make use of Miiverse are now unavailable.”

So basically, Nintendo is probably planning, at some indefinite time in the future, to discontinue the Miiverse service. No telling when they might flip the switch (no pun intended), the news is just that they’re preparing to do so.

RIP Miiverse; the service that gave us:

    “y cant metroid crawl?”,

“replace wii fit trainer with steve from minecraft”,

    and [this…](https://m.imgur.com/GDjaxVX)

Honestly, I can see why Nintendo would do this. EVERY game that came out on Wii U (and 3DS) whether it be retail, digital, Virtual Console or app, had its own Miiverse. All the shovelware, everything. That’s a lot to maintain and [try to] moderate!

Still, I’m going to miss it. Being able to take screenshots on Switch is awesome but I often don’t want to share them on Facebook or Twitter, I want to share them somewhere that other game-players can see and comment. Miiverse was perfect for that, it just didn’t have great implementation for many games and it shouldn’t have been REQUIRED for all games.

It also should have been faster. It would be kind of neat if maybe Miiverse was incorporated into the smartphone app so you could make a thread with a screenshot from your Switch, ask a question about a specific part of a game and get comments on it you get push notifications for or something.

If they are shutting it down, it is too bad because it could have been a nice feature for the Switch, especially since it doesn’t have any sort of spotpass functionality.

Miiverse is not a great social network by any means, but the idea of having these little chat rooms for each game you are playing is something unique that none of the other platforms is doing. Feels like this could have been an easy platform to improve, feature on cellphones and act as an item Nintendo could have added to their list of things you get with their paid online service

I actually loved Miiverse. Sharing a cool secret I found in Wind Waker or asking for help on a boss in Earthbound and getting great advice felt awesome. There was usually cool art and friendly comments. Splatoon 2 just won’t feel the same without all the Miiverse posts. I definitely have very fond memories of Miiverse.

That being said, it did give us [this masterpiece](https://youtu.be/LPme2gSE46U).

Is someone archiving everything? There is some real gems on the Miiverse

Pretty sure they’re just future-proofing the firmware so they don’t need to update it again whenever Miiverse *does* get shut down.

Man, it sucks so hard that nintendo drops services for their consoles so quickly when a new one launches. The switch is available for 4 months already and they are already killing the Miiverse.

Back when the WiiU launched in 2012, they killed WiiConnect24 just 7 months after that.

Yet, Sony and Microsoft are still supporting their old consoles, with MS even giving out 2 completely free games for 360 owners with a gold membership.

Has Cemu said anything about trying to emulate miiverse also? Now that I think of life without it, miiverse seems so integral certain games that it saddens me if we lose it forever.

Not sure if this is real or not, but I’d like to remind you guys that Nintendo has done this before. Nsider was a MASSIVE community with hundreds of thousands of active members logging in each day. There were constantly new discussion topics, non stop fan content was posted in the fan forums, and NOA staff members actually got involved and held live chats. Then you had the whole Camp Hyrule thing you could apply to be a part of. The site was more active than most could even imagine for a gaming forum (looking at the way back machine, the Wii forum had 2,240,424 posts not long after it’s creation, and before the Wii was even released). Then one weekend… BOOM. DEAD.

They went on to say that they had closed the service and hoped that fans would go off and make their own communities (such as this sub), and that they hoped to one day integrate everything with the new DS and Wii. Which, didn’t happen. It wasn’t until Miiverse on the Wii U that Nintendo actually made good on this promise, and it wouldn’t be too shocking to see them do it again.

No bueno. I honestly don’t understand big N’s thinking at times. Have social games, no direct way to interact with other players. No web portal for the Eshop.

Miiverse in its current state sorta sucks, but it was a fine idea and it sucks way more that Nintendo isn’t even *trying* to iterate on it with the Switch.

  23. Yar2084

    July 19, 2017 at 9:26 am

Miiverse would’ve been perfect for Switch. So disappointing.

  24. VinLAURiA

    July 19, 2017 at 9:26 am

Damn it. Miiverse was one of the best things about the Wii U, and I really wish Kimishima’s Nintendo wasn’t so intent on just burying the damn thing.

Yeah, I get it, “didn’t sell well”, “that’s business”, “reputation” yadda yadda yadda. Doesn’t mean I have to be happy about them trying to retcon the Wii U out of existence. Maybe if they’d given it the care it needed when it mattered and weren’t so keen to drop it at the first opportunity and leave all its buyers dead in the water, we wouldn’t be in this mess and they wouldn’t have to try to sweep it under the rug.

That probably includes screenshots and the screenshot album then? That’s a shame. I’m not too crushed about the main miiverse stuff but I actually use it a lot for screenshots.

Please let this not be the case, this would be awful! All those games with Miiverse features would not work fully anymore! Also Mario Maker would become basically unplayable due to the fact it used Miiverse for level sharing
