Oh, “that” big yellow button…

This happened just a few minutes ago.

We’ve changed our parking provider at work and the new payment system is online. It’s not owned or managed by us and I don’t use it, but I’m a helpful lass and don’t like to turn away a upset or confused user.

$U – arrives at my desk looking annoyed – “That new software doesn’t give me my parking charges.”

$me – “There is a statement page, it shows the balances and deductions on your account.”

$U – sarcastic tone- “I can see that, it won’t export so I can add it into my expenses.”

$me – feeling less helpful – “Isn’t there a print or export button? Maybe ask colleague x as they use it. I don’t have parking spot so have never used the system and it’s not managed by us.”

$U – refutes claim that it’s a printable and exportable page and whines about how they need it now, until I walk across to their desk.

$me – looks at screen, looks at user, points at huge yellow button saying *Export to PDF* walks away.

In his defense, I would look right past a big yellow button talking about PDF. I’d assume it is yet another dishonest ad.

Where I work we have self serve printers. Every time I work someone will walk up to one which has a big tablet display , with only four large buttons: copy, print, scan, fax. They will walk to me, call me over, and ask how to start copying/printing something, “if you want to copy, hit the copy button, if you want to print, hit the print button”. The inability of people to not be able to figure this out amazes me.

    We have:
$User: “My laptop keeps dying! Why does this keep happening to me”
$Me: plugs in powercable “wait a minute, then turn it back on”

I wonder if they wanted a spreadsheet, not a PDF. I’d find that a lot more useful, for sure.

I’ve found that size doesn’t always increase visibility in an interface. If an object or text is much larger than the rest it’s ignored as background or decoration.
