“Prompted by the wrongful deaths of two coworkers from faulty equipment, the strikers marched to protest low wages and unsafe working conditions. They took up the slogan “I Am a Man” as a variant on the first line of Ralph Ellison’s prologue to Invisible Man, “I am an invisible man.” By deleting the word “invisible,” the Memphis strikers asserted their presence, making themselves visible in standing up for their rights. Martin Luther King Jr. traveled to Memphis to address the striking workers; the next day, he was assassinated.”

Spent a lot of time in Memphis. Went to University there. This photograph is ubiquitous. So many professionals and professors have this in their offices. If you’re ever in Memphis go to the [National Civil Rights Museum](http://www.civilrightsmuseum.org/). It is worth every penny. Been there 4 times and have learned something new every time. Also, they are renovating the [Clayborn Temple](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clayborn_Temple). This was a vital meeting ground during the Civil Rights Movement. It was falling apart and structurally unsound. Glad to see the history won’t be forgotten.

Images like these are so sad. I can’t phathom being unable to organize without having weapons pointed at you.

Sadly, given the current state of things, I feel situations like these will become more and more common.

This picture reminds me very much of the Isaac Asimov short story “Strikebreaker.” It’s a great read and I highly recommend it (you don’t have to be a science fiction fan to enjoy it either).

Back when there was a real reason to march, beyond hurt feelings.
