Jump scares in horror movies are like fart jokes in comedy movies.

It’s really cheap and stupid, but it gets you every time.

And both will make people insist the movie you’re watching is good

And sometimes farts in horror movies are like jump scares in comedy movies.

I’d be disappointed if someone hasn’t done a fartscare compilation of famous jump scares replaced with fart sounds. Sounds a lot like it probably should exist somewhere.

Horror movie writer here: you’re not wrong, but jump scares are a necessary part of the delicate balance of any good horror flick.

They are, as you state, easy to incorporate … but that doesn’t automatically make them worthless.

The big payoffs you remember from the 3rd act only come — if I’ve done my job — because you’ve been teased a time or two. You’ve been primed by jump scares or Wes Craven’s special brand of “I’m going to rip open this closet door and find nothing inside” gag. Peaks and valleys, and all that.

Humor, suspense, the establishment of rules, gore, nudity, and (most importantly for me) creative and new death scenes are all part of the mix.

    And so are jump scares.

When they are false jump scares it’s lazy and cheap. However, every now and again you do see a good jump scare from the “monster” and it’s worth it.

Fuck jump scares man. I love watching horror movies except for whenever there’s jump scares. That’s why that movie about the clowns that invade earth is my favorite horror movie

Yes, both somehow always work (for some people).

Crude humor in general is the comedy, “jump scare”.

Though crude humor can be done well just as jump scares can be done well. All it takes is great writing and execution.

I’m conflicted on jump scares. It’s difficult to make a good horror movie, and while jump scares are a cheap tactic they at least get my heart going.

Not really, I never jumped during a fart scene in any move.

I think a more apt comparison would be to the balls shot in comedy. When something or someone whacks someones balls is what I mean.
