“artisanal” pot hole repair. In Portland this would cost more than sending out a contractor to fill it in properly.

Honestly it is better than what they normally do, which is toss a bunch of gravel in the hole.

That’s only step one. Next mix up a 5 gallon bucket of two-part epoxy and completely cover. Return annually to buff

I assumed some lazy person just cut the tree down and put an asphalt walkway there without bothering to remove the stump. The asphalt looks too new and traffic (foot/bike) too light to have suffered a failure big enough to make a pothole

Better than anywhere in New Orleans

This looks nice. However, that wood will eventually degrade and decompose. And when it does, it’s going to cause an infection in the asphalt’s open wound, and the street is going to start breaking down.

Measures like this are only good for immediate emergency hemorrhaging stoppage, and assumes that you can get the street to medical care within a couple of hours. If this stays in long term, you’re going to need to amputate.

This is actually awesome. In Pennsylvania there are hundreds of thousands of potholes. There are also hundreds of thousands of logs laying on the sides of roads. I guess we never thought to fill the potholes with them.

What if there was just a tree there and they decided to build the road around it and later decided to cut the tree down?

It’s such a snug fit. Did he:
Dig out the cavity to fit the stump?
Saw down the stump to fit the cavity?

There’s a famous possibly apocryphal story about a man so frustrated that the local authorities weren’t fixing potholes he went round one night and spray painted giant penises around each one. Suddenly they all got fixed within a week.

Gravel wash away in rain. Wood expand in rain. Wood win every time.

It could be worse, they could do like they do in Texas and turn the pot holes into speed bumps.

    It’s because of broken English.

City planner: ‘Is problem. How wood fix road?’

Road worker: ‘Is easy, just have to find right size log.’

Step 1: chop down one entire tree that is the right diameter.

Step 2: Throw away 99%, save one slice for pothole fill

Hello my friends, I argue with my comrade Dimitri about roads all the time. He says that the roads in all the America are great, but I say that it’s western propaganda and Mother Russia’s roads are best. Can you settle our dispute on this matter?

*To be serious I often hear pro skaters complaining that there were no skatable asphalt in there small native town, and jokes about roads quality. But based on what I see quality is a lot better at least in southern states.*

  35. Inspi

    July 19, 2017 at 12:09 am

Screw Russia, I need this in my current USA neighborhood. We get sinkholes every few months near the sewer line connections at a few intersections, the city comes out a dumps a bunch of asphalt in it, then repeats when they reopen instead of actually fixing anything. This way at least it has to sink the damn stump/log first.

  46. ManusJustus

    July 19, 2017 at 12:09 am

Looks like new asphalt, there’s probably a utility manhole or valve under the stump they’ll raise to grade later. Not an uncommon construction method, but an interesting choice of materials.

You mock, but this is better than many US cities. I live in Dallas and there are some insane pot holes in places, even on the highway. I would love for a stump to fill them, better than an 8 inch deep hole.
