Going to Throw This Out There, If You No Like Send It Back

Ok r/cigars, what is the deal here? I couldn’t help but notice that my post about secret Santa was removed, apparently there is a list of subs that are banned from even being mentioned.

Well, how would anyone know that? I do not see a list anywhere, it isn’t in the wiki either.

I have received some PMs telling me that one subreddit in particular is a “troll” subreddit, I guess once again I don’t understand how they are having a July secret Santa, which includes members of r/cigars, (including myself) but isn’t allowed to be spoken of.

I guess over the past few months, I have noticed some things that seem off, some members here are pretty much given free reign to do whatever they want, say whatever they want with no repercussions, while other immediately have their comments removed. I get it, being a mod is ever so difficult, it just seems weird to me that the mods seem to “notice” certain posts over others.

I, hopefully, like most others am very concerned over u/nicklibretti ‘s trade where he scammed u/mebreig out of aged Davidoff. I have yet to see this trade made right, or seen a mod take action about this. Do I need to be privy to any type of communications between the mods and this user? No, However, I think that it would go a long way in showing that the mod team is concerned about the user base here. If users are allowed to rip off others in trades without any action taken, how safe can anyone feel about completing trades?

Also, why is any discourse about the sub immediately deleted? (or not deleted and users allowed to flame the OP) are we not allowed to have any say in what happens here? I would like to see a discussion happen in which users would be allowed to air grievances or offer suggestions without friends of the mods/users name call or get all pissy because of a difference in opinion.

There have been numerous posts that have been made as updates, in which mods have lied or misrepresented things as “fact” only for it to come out that, what they told the community wasn’t true. (for example, what is the issue with the dash being compromised, why were some users banned, where is this banned subreddit list.)
It seems that every day more and more content is being removed/not allowed, all the while ‘mold v plume”, “smallbatch”, “real cubans” posts are splattered all over the page.

I am 100 percent sure I will receive backlash for even bringing this up, I feel like we are all in this together as BOTL and SOTL and if we can’t even have a serious discussion about the shortcoming of the sub, what’s the point? #mic drop

I think it’s a shame the way the mods are currently running things. Contest posts are now confined to the OP? Great! I hate seeing interesting content. Bring on more mold, plume and fake cubans! Plus I sort by new (*fight me*) so I forget the things are even going on and don’t get to see all the entry’s. Total me problem but I’ve not seen anyone other than the mods say it’s a good thing.

Lack of transparency about how anything works with AOTM and the whole dashboard ordeals.

How about that 9:1 rule when it comes to u/talltree2011? Don’t get me wrong dude post about DE all you want they are a staple in my humidor and I’m glad we have you around. Heck I wish we had more reps actively participating in the sub.

Two posts by my boy u/outodoors removed for lack of content. Apparently saying you are enjoying a cigar with a drink is a lack of content round here. Yea screw him for enjoying cigars! Post about fake cubans instead man. Makes sense right??? While “look at what I bought today!” stay up. I like to see haul posts don’t get me wrong but the removal of posts that violate the rules seems random at best. Kinda like who gets their memes removed.

We need the mods to ether step up the game and enforce the rules fairly, because if that can’t be done maybe the rule needs to be re-visited. Or hire some new mods that will actually interact with the community and will start to set things right. Heck we have current mods who have not posted here in weeks. Best way to get a read on the community of r/cigars? Well not posting here apparently.

EDIT: Gold? First time a post of mine has been gilded! Thanks stranger!

I would just like to second that /u/nicklibretti is a fucking scumbag. I’ve told him so a few times. I haven’t seen a trade that fucking shitty in my whole time on here. And I got verified 2+ years ago. I may not post a lot, but I scroll through and look at threads that aren’t “smoking my first liga” or “random emotional cigar post,” and that trade just shocked me.

There should be a standard among cigar traders in this community to not fish for aged bullshit because your sticks suck. You can’t allow something like that to go by squeaky clean because it sets a precedent among other people that may or may not be total shitbags, like /u/nicklibretti, who is a cocksucker.

edit: just wanted to clarify that /u/nicklibretti, is in fact, a dildo.

edit: Reading over this again, I’m sorry for the language but I stand by what I said. /u/mebreig was more than generous with his end, literally going above and beyond the requirement for aged Davidoff and did not to deserve the slap in the face with the first end, or the salt in the wound second attempt that was just a plain embarrassment.

If you can’t send a proportionate end, don’t.

Dang for a sub so stingy on upvotes to get 50+ upvotes AND 3 golds in an hour you must have struck a cord with a lot of the base here. Good on you for speaking up and willing to shoulder the heat if people didn’t agree. With that said, you’ve really hit the nail on the head in my opinion.

3 years ago when I made my first post here, /r/cigars was a different place. I can’t say if it was better or worse, just different. People were buddies, no one tried to rip anyone off, and if it did happen that person would be held accountable until it was fixed, and if it wasn’t fixed EVERYONE on the sub did something about it, they were held accountable by the users and the mods as they both would call bullshit when they saw it. Everyone was on the same level in terms of fairness, and industry insiders weren’t allowed to slide by “because of their status”

Full disclosure I had to research this whole nick libretti trade and it was quite shocking what actually went on (including part 2 of the trade) and what the mods let slide.

I still don’t understand why I’m not seeing “This is what I’m smoking tonight” much anymore. I find those posts pretty interesting, **WAY** more interesting in fact than the “is this plume” posts or “here’s a glass top box of cubans I bought, are they real?” at least in those “this is what I’m smoking” threads it gives others an opportunity to share suggestions on similar cigars or talk about cigars in general. At the end of the day, are we not here to discuss cigars?

So, kudos to you /u/nicknameisnub for standing up and calling bovine scatology on something when you see it.

I agree with you the feeling that things are just not being told to everyone is bad right now. I know I am not that active as of late, there has been a few things the went on here a few months ago that left a bad taste with me, but when I first joined this awesome sub things were great, people just hanging helping one another, this is how I got my start into cigars, this sub and the people here. Most of the users that I was with in when I started have just faded away. I do miss what the sub used to be and have move on to other media, like IG and so on. I do check in every now and again.

Doesn’t matter what we think. It’s not a democracy, it’s an oligarchy. They hold the power and will use it how they see fit. There’s no transparency or open mindedness. u/moocowrich was an open minded and fair mod who interacted with the community. Since he stepped down you have nobody who responds to concerns brought up. You have mods changing rules when the overwhelming majority of the community feels a different way. Much like in real life if you’re not cozy with upper management or administration you’ll be treated differently because they have the power over you. You see people being singled out all the time, selectively enforcing rules while others get a pass. I would imagine u/nicklibretti was never sanctioned because he’s a “industry insider” and could be more use to the mod team and benefit from his connections more so than u/mebreig. I was a redditor first which is why I frequent this community. I’m not a fan of the “because I said so” mentality of people in charge because there’s a lot of other cigar communities out there that I haven’t even explored yet but I will say that if this is how it’s going to be here I’ll happily move on myself.

I guess I’ll ramble for a little while, since I got tagged here. We’ll go with bullet points to make it easier to read.

    * Based on the number of upvotes this is getting, I’d recommend the mod team take a close look at what’s being said. There’s a lot of support for at least parts of it.

    * It helps to get specific (you do that in some places, which is helpful for sure). If you say, “some members here are pretty much given free reign to do whatever they want”, it’s easy to say, “no, that’s not true”. And now the level of discourse matches current American politics. Instead, calling out the specifics helps. What are the cases where folks are saying things that shouldn’t be allowed, but are okay? What’s getting removed? That’s where it starts getting helpful – everyone has biases, and it’s hard to see them without specifics.

    * That trade was awful. I’d advocate a temp ban until he makes it right.

    * We don’t see what’s going on behind the scenes. I can’t tell you what is / isn’t right now, but it’s worth remembering. When I was a mod, I had a front-row seat to some weird crap. Action can get taken, but we might not all see it. I’m not saying transparency isn’t important, I’m just saying it’s not possible to be 100% transparent about absolutely everything.

    * Whoever thought it would be fun to post what looked like innocent links that actually linked you to dick pics when I was a mod? Which mod do you think saw that first and removed it? This has nothing to do with anything – just pointing out that someone was a jerk and made me look at a bunch of dick pics when I was a mod. Jerk.

    * Small Batch: I think it says something about the state of the industry when ‘delivered quickly’ and ‘good prices on good quality’ are enough to make us so excited. But they DO! Because it’s not normal from lots of other places. It’s not Small Batch shilling, it’s the customers. Because those guys know what they’re doing.

    * This all comes up over and over, from different people with different concerns. Here’s what I’d ask everyone to keep in mind: 1) this is about cigars, not some life or death thing 2) don’t be dicks to each other, and 3) I think this subreddit is about finding friends and sharing a common hobby. Most people seem to do that, even if they drift away from the sub. I call it a win overall. Even if that’s all the sub does, seems like a decent thing to me.

So there you have some random ranting. There are things I agree with, things I disagree with, and things I don’t care about. Mostly, I would be happy if we talked about cigars and met some friends. I don’t think most of us need to take a side on that – it’s true for all of us.

One last thing: I’ll take the blame for it not being obvious that some things aren’t allowed. Before I left the mod team, I was going to update the wiki to call out the banned subs/websites that you can’t link to (AutoMod removes posts that link to certain sites). I didn’t get that done. So you can blame me for that part. My bad.

*some members here are pretty much given free reign to do whatever they want, say whatever they want with no repercussions, while other immediately have their comments removed. I get it, being a mod is ever so difficult, it just seems weird to me that the mods seem to “notice” certain posts over others.*

this is also a difficult situation because its not always the mods… While i cant speak to every situation I know from personal experience there are some “overly diligent” disguntled people who in an attempt to troll myself and/or make the mods life’s more difficult automatically report anything specific people may post that borders on violating the rules and forcing the mods to action. Hence why my post might get reported and deleted for a cross post or something, someone else’s may go by just fine because they’re not on someones shit list to bring it to mod attention.

Edit: Also i can still see the secret santa post, not sure if something changed

Many of these problems are ones that plague small subreddits specifically. People get stingy with the upvotes in an attempt to moderate the content they see and soon nothing has any points and everything is boring which in turn drives away content-makers. It’s a constant battle in the graphic design subs too. IMO a “proper” moderate use of the upvote/downvote system to determine quality content with as little regulation as can be gotten away with is the key to jump-starting communities that feel like they’re in a death spiral.

Just my two cents as a very occasional poster.

As a previous mod and weighing in, I think your post should never have been deleted. Even though I was a dick and commented like a dick, your post is still legit and people should simply use their up votes and down votes to decide if your post has any merit. It looks very backwards to me and now how things should operate….

Honestly things like this among others is kinda what drove me away (coupled with a crazy busy work life,) but every time I’d drift back to /r/cigars, I’d get caught up in drama watching cat fights between the sub, members, mods, and other subs (battlezone, the peoples, etc). I can’t stand trolls. They really push communities apart. Then seeing banned users rejoining with Alts, hearing about modifications of AOTM votes etc.. all seems weird.

Maybe I’ll get back into the swing of things in the near future, who knows. Just my $0.02

I’m personally glad that the Battle Zone troll hate sub isn’t something allowed to be discussed here, what is disappointing is the massive amount of people here that also are there yet are popular or “well regarded”. Trolling is in vogue now I guess, despite it being toxic and a waste of time.

Unfortunately for that sub though, it seems all the auto-tag RES plugins that block The_Donald, ESS, Incels, and numerous other known hate subs, also blocks every single entity in that sub and so many others too. So the hundreds of millions on Reddit using auto-tag plugins for RES have them all tagged as toxic trolls or simply can not see them when they post.

While I have little for or against the moderators here, this community is way more elitist from its popular members here than people want to admit. It’s a clique. You always see “OH THIS GROUP IS SO GREAT, EVERYONE IS SO NICE, etc”, but it’s bullshit, every sub says that and it’s never true. There’s always an opposite side or the closet of skeletons. I do appreciate the occasional reply to a question that’s useful though, and would prefer this sub be made to focus on the majority of occasional to semi-frequent indulgers without huge stockpiles, rather than the popular bombers and whatever else. The cuban worship is a bit eh too, most of us haven’t had them, don’t even know where to get them or aged ones and even if we did we don’t trust violating the law to do it.

The mods can abuse their power or lack abuse all they want, it doesn’t bother me since it’s not significant in any means compared to my country, though 50% of them are blocked by the auto taggers apparently.

Edit: If a scam happened or someone lied, that’s bad. I’ve been scammed and lied to, others have too and I’ve heard it’s not uncommon, but it’s still shitty to do. Deal with that.

Edit: /u/swimcory Oh I’ve been here or lurking around here for multiple years. Those skeletons have far less to do with rules as they do with elitism and popular people and behavior and that troll sub a little than people here want to admit. Sorry for the messy sentence. As a side note, does it not strike anyone a little odd that a sub that is so benevolent and great and kind has a sub that actively insults others from that sub and yet is full of most of the same members? Of course that was a relatively new addition to the skeleton closet back from what I recall and even before I was lurking or posting occasionally or engaging with less frequent posters here, there were skeletons I’d heard of from even before that. In the end, it’s still a useful sub for information posts or to see what new posters are smoking or what not.

Edit: /u/Snuffcan Because I didn’t violate the rules of the sub. Addendum: I remember that the user base saving was an issue here recently right? I wasn’t privy or part of it only read about it after, I post in different subs far more often so barely pay attention to this sub, plus the rest of my post applies to my thoughts on the rest of the sub, so usually only newbie posts or what they’re smoking suggestions are what I pay attention to, or a rare question like my boveda one. It’s true some toxic people here thought I would harass people or endanger them by knowing their addresses, which is odd given that they were the ones harassing and lying about me, typical with bully fears and their contradictions. Nothing’s ever come from that because rumors about me have always been lies. I’m the one who’s received nasty notes and glitter bombs to my old address or randomly gets user mentioned to harass and insult some more.
