I had a professor in college who worked with her for a number of years. He said in real life, she is one of the most wonderful people you could ever meet, and exactly the way her public persona portrays her.

There are many reasons to love Dolly Parton. She’s witty and a smart businesswoman. But my favorite reason to love Dolly is actually her philanthropic work. She founded the Dollywood foundation to support a number of areas, but one of the primary things her foundation does is to foster a love of reading in young children through a program called Imagination Library. In her county in East Tennessee, Imagination Library sends every child a free book a month in the mail, from birth to age five. The program was so successful, they now help other counties replicate the program. By partnering with the Dollywood Foundation, who has been able to build relationships directly with publishers to source books as affordably as possible, counties are able to offer this program at a relatively low cost. The Imagination Library program is in over 1600 communities, serving more than 1,000,000 children per year ([find more information on program’s website](http://imaginationlibrary.com/)).

Also, the first book a child receives is always The Little Engine That Could. How’s that for wholesome?

I’m pretty sure that is a direct quote from her character in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which is a phenomenally funny movie with some of the catchiest songs ever put in a film. She’s pretty great.

I feel like Dolly Parton is a living version of southern hospitality. She’s an absolutely wonderful person, and she’s proof positive that money doesn’t always corrupt.

Back in the seventies I used to live next door to a pub. In the summer evenings I would lean out my bedroom window and listen to the jukebox music leaking into the warm air. The soulful melody of Jolene is etched into my soul. That, and Ballroom Blitz.

Weird that I read that with her voice in my head.

I hadn’t realized how ingrained her Tennessee accent had become in pop culture that I remember it that well

Grew up listening to a lot of Dolly with my granny who is also named Dolly. This weekend at my granny’s funeral she had given directives for the songs she wanted, and the last one was “I will always love you” by Dolly Parton and I just basically laid on a pew sobbing. Just amazed me even through her sudden and quick battle with cancer that she wanted us to know how much she loved us all.

I was a first responder at the time to the fires last year. She went above and beyond for our community. Thing is, she has always went above and beyond even before that. She is truly a great person. She gives so much back to the community.

Please consider Gatlinburg for your vacation this year to help the community continue to grow. Also take some time and visit Dollywood; you won’t be disappointed. Hint: if you wait till closer to Christmas, they have some awesome stuff to see!

I never really gave Dolly much thought until I took a trip to Dollywood last year, but she’s kind of amazing.

I was out yesterday–sometimes being the person to smile first at others and sometimes being the one smiled at first.

I started thinking about how it’s virtually effortless for me to be happy in the moment when someone else smiles at me and it sometimes takes a negligible but noticeable bit of effort for me to smile first (if something just went wrong earlier or whatever). It hit me that if I do smile first, it means I give myself the happiness of letting go of my frustration or whatever I was feeling and then I share that happiness with the other person through my smile.

That idea of giving myself happiness first gave me a new appreciation for the advice you often hear to be the first one to break the ice, apologize, make up, etc. I’ve followed that kind of advice pretty closely for most of my life, but I sometimes felt like I took a bit of a hit from doing it.

Thinking of it as giving myself happiness first (the happiness of not being standoffish, not clutching my ego, not holding a grudge, etc.) and then sharing that with the other person gave me a deeper understanding of and appreciation for how valuable that kind of approach is and I realized there’s no hit involved at all. I’m giving myself a gift and then sharing it with the other person.

Heads up to fellow Tennessee residents: You can get a “vanity” license plate now that supports the Imagination Library and you get to drive around with Dolly’s face on the back of your car. 🙂
